HENDERSONVILLE — Louis Joseph Volpe, 75, of Hendersonville, died October 31, 2012, at Carillon Assisted Living.
He was born on January 12, 1937, in Bronx, N.Y., to the late Sebastian and Josephine Milone Volpe. He was also preceded in death by his wife and love of his life Linda Volpe, who died in 2000.
He worked as a tile setter for many years, following his retirement he worked at the North Carolina Justice Academy at the Edneyville campus for five years, and he was of the Catholic faith. He was a self-proclaimed "Duck Man of Stoneledge" due to his artistic wooden decoy ducks.
He is survived by his daughter, Lori Vesely and her husband, Mike; his two sons, Bobby Volpe, and Jimmy Volpe; three sisters; June Stroub, Rosemarie Rodriguez, Carol Smoak; two brothers, Frank Volpe and Jimmy Volpe; and 10 grandchildren: Mallori Vesely, Michael Vesely, Robert Volpe, Jessica Leonardo, Jaime Volpe, Melissa Lopez, Michelle Snider, Tammy Rodriguez, Victoria Volpe and Nicholas Volpe.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731 or to Carillon Assisted Living, 3851 Howard Gap Road, Hendersonville, NC 28792.

HENDERSONVILLE — James Edward Cascio, 63, of Hendersonville passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012.
Mr. Cascio was a native of Tampa, Fla., and a resident of Henderson County for four years. He was a son of Cecilia Cascio and the late James Cascio Sr.
A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, James served during the Vietnam War and was awarded one of the nation’s most respected medals, the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his daughter, Stacie Raasch, and her husband, Gary; grandchildren, Rachel and Garren Raasch, all of Hendersonville; mother, Cecilia Cascio; sisters, Patricia Giles and Zoila Fernandez; brother, Mark Cascio; and nephew, Brian Giles, all of Tampa, Fla.
A celebration of life will be in Tampa, Fla., at a later date.

MILLS RIVER — James Everette Banks Jr., 69, of Mills River passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012, surrounded by family and friends. Before enjoying retirement, Everette ran Banks Construction for 40 years and also owned The Corner Market in Etowah with his wife for 20 years.
Everette is survived by Betty, his wife of 41 years; son James Everette Banks III "Trey" and wife, Heather; son Shane Michael Banks; and a very special grandson, James Everette Banks IV "Kade." He is also survived by his mother, Helen Coffee; siblings Ernest Banks, Robert Banks, Timothy Banks, Preston Golightly, Jackie Morrow and Darlene Puttman; several nieces, nephews and innumerable friends. Preceded in death by his father, James Everette Banks Sr.; brothers Donald Banks, Chadwick Golightly and Larry Banks; and sisters Ruth Banks, Mary Banks and Wanda Banks.
Born in Buncombe County, Everette was a successful contractor and proud rock mason all his life. He and his wife built their home on Tole Allison Road, which has been a social gathering place for the Etowah, Mills River and Horse Shoe area since the late ’70s. A stranger might have visited, but they always left as a friend with the invitation to return soon. This was certainly evident in the kind outpouring of the local community, and Everette appreciated each and every one who donated their time, items and money to help with bills during his illness. Everette was also an avid hunter and bagged three deer this year alone. Memorial services have been planned at Boiling Springs Baptist Church on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. Pastor Cody Sturgill will officiate. The family wants to thank everyone for all their support over the last few years and has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society in Everette’s memory would be appreciated.

FLETCHER — Charlotte H. Johnson, 96, of Fletcher passed away peacefully October 31, 2012. A native of Hendersonville, Mrs. Johnson was retired from Olin after 30-plus years of service. She enjoyed bingo, playing cards and sewing.
Mrs. Johnson is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Walter Johnson. She is survived by nieces Paula Oates of Dana, Barbara Bohannan of Edneyville and Mamie Jo Lewis of Greensboro; a nephew, Jerry Freeman and his wife, Diane, of Duncan, S.C.; as well as many other nieces, nephews and loving friends.

HENDERSONVILLE — Eva Lee Case, 91, of Hendersonville passed away peacefully Oct. 30, 2012. A native of Blue Ridge, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Albert Baxter Brown and Ollie Postelle Brown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Case; a son, Phillip Stanley Glover, and a daughter, Yvonne Moore.
She is survived by sons, Stephen Glover of Hendersonville and Donnie Glover of Clinton, S.C.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill Brown and Morgan Brown, of Hendersonville; sister, Helen Daerr, of Hartwell, Ga., and special nieces, Mary Ruth Nichols and Bess Young.
A private graveside service was held at Shepherd Memorial Park.

DANA — Marie Gibbs Wilds, 93, of Dana passed away Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at Elizabeth House.
She was a longtime member of Refuge Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 78 years, Loranza (Shorty) Wilds, who died Sept. 3, 2012, as well as two sons, Jeter Wilds and Jack Wilds.
She is survived by a son, Edwin Wilds, and a daughter, Carlyon Wilds Gillett.
Additionally she is survived by 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was born in Portland, Ore., and moved to Hendersonville as a little girl. She attended elementary school at Dana.

FLAT ROCK — Jamie G. Austin, 55, of Flat Rock, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 2, 2012, at Elizabeth House, after a graceful two-year battle with cancer. A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, he was the son of the late George E. and Barbara S. Austin. He was a respected team leader with General Electric, retiring in 2012 following 35 years of service. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 13 years, Angela B. Austin; his son, Mitchell B. Austin and his wife Kim of Mills River; two sisters, Joni A. Ward and her husband Gerald of Zirconia, Gina A. Wheeler and her husband Michael of Barnardsville; his mother- in-law, Joan McGraw of Zirconia; his sister-inlaw, Karen B. Watkins and her husband William of McKinney, Texas; many loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; and his loving, four-legged sidekick, Prissy.
A funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Blair Stewart will officiate. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the Forest Lawn Chapel.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Sarah Gibbs Peltier, 60, of Greeneville, Tenn., died on November 2, 2012, at Morristown Hamblen Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held November 11, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Ottway United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Donna Waddle will lead the service.
She is survived by her loving husband and caregiver Dan F. Peltier, whom she always said was truly the love of her life, one of God’s blessings to her. She was also blessed with a loving daughter and sonin-law, Carrie McGraw Israel and Tim. Son and daughter- in-law, Stephen and Jenny McGraw. Both of her children spent every possible moment with her until she passed, caring for her and encouraging her to fight the good fight. Step-grandson Daniel A Peltier whom she raised from the age of 2 as one of her own. Three beautiful and loving granddaughters, Sierra Rose Wright, Meredith Anne Israel and Amy Corrine Israel; and a grandson, Trey McGraw. A great-granddaughter, Camdyn Alyssa Israel. Three stepdaughters, Tammy McCamey, Daneen Fillers and Angie Miller; and four step-grandsons and a stepgranddaughter. A very special adopted mother, Pauline Corn of Hendersonville, N.C. Three brothers and sisters-in-law, Clarence and Teresa Gibbs of Cosby, Tenn., Richard and Andy Gibbs of Thorn Hill, Tenn., and William and Jayne Gibbs of Lees Summit, Mich. Two sisters and brother in law, Blanche and Jesse Swain of Mills River, N.C., and Rebecca Farmer of Marion, N.C. Two brother and sister in laws, Ted and Margaret Peltier and William and Kathy Peltier, and Nancy Peltier. Her little companion “Miss Daisy.” Very special friends, Jim and Pat Holbrook, Jack and Brenda Cobble, and Joe and Dee Low, and Bob Foulks and Shelby Gass. A loving church family and many other friends.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Clarence P. and Ethel W. Gibbs in Henderson Co. N.C.
Sarah Gibbs Peltier of the Ottway community went home to her final resting place surrounded by her loving family on November 2, 2012. After a successful career with SELEE Corp. in Hendersonville, N.C., she retired in 2007 to the Ottway community to enjoy her retirement with her husband, Dan F. Peltier, and raise miniature donkeys. Diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in 2011, she continued to live her life to the fullest and enjoy each day that God blessed her with. Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Ottway United Methodist Youth to the Ottway United Methodist Church building fund at 2650 Ottway Road, Greeneville, Tenn. 37745. At Sarah’s request, her body will be cremated.

COLUMBUS — Marjorie Philbeck Metcalf passed away November 1, 2012, at Four Seasons Hospice House, Flat Rock, N.C. She was a resident of Tryon Estates, Columbus, N.C. She was born 12/7/22 in Forest City, N.C., daughter of the late Lee and Nora Digh Philbeck.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Hendersonville, N. C. Marjorie was also a former member of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, Ga., for 25 years.
After graduation from Shelby Business School, she worked for Stonecutter Mills, Spindale, N.C. After moving to Greenville, S.C., she was employed by South Carolina National Bank and later lived in Atlanta, Ga., for 30 years. Ed was an independent rep for textile manufacturers and she worked side by side with him. In 1981, she and Ed moved to Lake Lure, N.C., and later to Flat Rock, N.C., where she served as a Pink Lady for 17 years at Pardee Hospital, Hendersonville, N.C. One of her highlights in the auxiliary was serving as a member of the entertainment committee to find someone to host the annual recognition dinner. She contacted Buffalo Bob Smith of NBC television, who was moving to Flat Rock, and he agreed to entertain the group with Howdy Doody.
She is survived by Ed Metcalf, husband of 70 years; Fred and Geneva Metcalf, Forest City, N.C., brother-in-law and sisterin- law; Sam and Ethel Metcalf, Rutherfordton, N.C., brother-in-law and sisterin- law; George and Phyllis Metcalf, brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Estelle Scoggins Metcalf, Greenville, N.C., sister-in-law; Gladys Henderson, Forest City, N.C., sister-in-law; a number of nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, TuiShai.
A graveside service will be held at two o’clock Sunday, November 4, 2012, in the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery with her nephew, the Reverend Bob Philbeck officiating. KILBRIDE, Dr. James M., professor of psychology and education at Miami-Dade Kendall Campus for 35 years, died Saturday, October 20 in Miami. He was 79.
Dr. Kilbride is survived by daughter, Cristin Elizabeth Kilbride Bittle of Hendersonville, N.C., his son, Gary Kilbride, and daughter, Kathleen Kilbride Calder, both of Miami. His grandchildren are Holland Kilbride Bittle, Caden Robert Bittle, Sydney Cristin Bittle and Simon James Michael Vai Bittle of Hendersonville, N.C.

GRANITEVILLE, S.C. — Mr. William R. “Bill” Byrnes, Jr., 74, of Graniteville, S.C., beloved husband of Mrs. Elizabeth “Bets” Byrnes, entered into rest suddenly on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012.
Born on Long Island, N.Y., he was a son of the late William R., Sr. and Eleanor Lasser Byrnes. He was a former Construction Manager with the American Bridge Division of US Steel. His beloved Marine Corps was held very near his heart but his family always came first. Bill loved a round of Golf, playing at various courses with his buddy Frank Douglas on Tuesdays. He was a history buff and recently be became very fond of Quantum Physics.
In addition to his beloved wife of 52 years and his parents, family members include his sons, William R. “Rob” Byrnes, (Nancy Quick) Boulder, Colo., Joseph Patrick Byrnes, (Roxann) Plantation, Fla., and Timothy Sean Byrnes, (Dana) Frazier’s Bottom, W.V.; siblings, Janet Wieland, Pa., Tom Byrnes, N.Y., Jimmy Byrnes, Texas, Ann Saunders, Calif., and Corrine Kraus, Calif.; grandchildren, Shaun Patrick Byrnes, Joseph Patrick Byrnes, Jr, Kelsey Skye Byrnes, Laura Gabrielle Byrnes, Samantha Elizabeth Byrnes and Natalie Sean Byrnes, a great-grandson, Dylan Scott Byrnes, and his beloved four-legged son, Brody.
In accordance with his wishes, a private Celebration of Life Service will be held with full military honors being accorded by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard. Bill will be cremated following the service.
