HENDERSONVILLE — Dorothea (Dotti) Irene Murray Farr died on October 31, 2012, at the age of 94. She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 69 years, Leo Elton Farr, Jr., as well as her three children: Rev. Cheryl Farr Keipper (Gary), Marshall Farr (Lisa), and Rev. Ronald Farr (Patty). There are six grandchildren: Cory Anne Nelson, Benjamin Keipper, Rachel Farr, Tara Farr, Julia Farr, Marigo Farr; and one great grandchild, Jasmine Eileen Nelson. Dorothea was the daughter of Roy and Effie Murray, preceded in death by her brother, Robert Murray, and her sisters, Mildred Sargeant, and Ruth Gibson.
A woman of endless energy, enthusiasm and love, Dotti was a dedicated mother, nurse, consummate seamstress and cook, devoted Girl Scout leader, and first aid trainer for over thirty years. She received her RN from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and later in life pursued her Bachelors of Nursing to become a public health nurse, serving in the Vestal Central School (NYS) system. She was a pillar of First Congregational Church UCC of Binghamton, N.Y., a youth group leader, and officer of the statewide Women’s Fellowship.
In retirement, Dotti joined the First Congregational Church of Hendersonville, N.C., where she and Leo created a card ministry via the computer for those who were ill or hospitalized. Dotti led exercise classes in area nursing homes for the Office on Aging, and she volunteered at the Pardee Hospital as a pink lady for many years.
Dotti’s camping spirit took her and Leo to New Hampshire, where they spent eleven summers in the White Mountains of New Hampshire as National Park hosts. They traveled across country a number of times in their 26-foot RV trailer, touring Mexico and Alaska. Near and dear to her heart was her wish to learn how to paint, which she did in her fifties. No matter where she travelled, she painted, and Leo made the picture frames. Her paintings still decorate her apartment at Lake Point Landing.
Dotti’s zest for life was unquenchable. She loved the water and swam a mile a day into her eighties. She competed in the Golden Olympics at the Royal Coachman campground in Venice, FL. Dotti was a scrabble champion, loved to play bridge with friends, and was a fan of dancing. She and Leo kept up to date with Arthur Murray dance lessons and enjoyed square dancing.
Dotti and Leo were inseparable. They truly set a wonderful model of love and faithfulness for the family, and could always be seen holding hands at Lake Point Landing. For each of the children, Dotti exuded excitement over career choices and encouraged independence. She was a caring and energetic mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her legacy remains in her family and the countless lives she touched by her faith in God and her selfless outreach to the community.
Memorial Services will be held at the Bridge of Lake Point Landing on Nov. 9, at 2pm. Services will be conducted by the Revs. Cheri Farr Keipper and Ron Farr. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to four Seasons Hospice Development Office and the Council on Aging for Henderson County.
