Alice Louise Womack of Hendersonville died Thursday August 2, 2012 at The Oaks at Sweeten Creek.
A native of White County, GA and a longtime resident of Henderson County. Mrs. Womack was the daughter of the late William Benson Freeman and Alice Moore Freeman. She worked for 20 years as the Manager of Town & Country Gift Shop and later worked at Swanson’s Gifts.
She was member of the Mud Creek Baptist Church and worked in the Primary Dept. for many years.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Lewis Womack, a son William Charles Womack, and 5 Brothers and 2 sisters.
She is survived by one son Terry Womack of Campobello, SC; a daughter-in-law Sue Womack two grandsons Anthony Womack of Raleigh, NC and Todd Womack of Murfreesboro, TN.Great-grandchildren Mason and Sadie Womack of Raleigh and Parker Womack of Murfreesboro, TN.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the The Oaks at Sweeten Creek for all the care and love shown; as well as, Four Seasons Hospice.
Funeral services will held at 3:00 PM on Saturday August 4, 2012 at Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel with Rev. Greg Mathis officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service on Saturday from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Barbara Gasperson, 300 Oklawaha Circle, Hendersonville, 28739.

MILLS RIVER — Mrs. Constance Janet Zirkle, 88, of Mills River, died Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the Laurels of Hendersonville. She was the daughter of the late James and Minnie Brittain. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Zirkle was preceded in death by her husband, Don D. Zirkle.
She was born July 22, 1924 in Washington D.C. During World War II, she served in the United States Navy. She retired as a nursing assistant with Margaret R. Pardee Memorial Hospital after 20 years of service and was an active member of Mills River Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Zirkle is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held 10 AM Monday, August 6, 2012 at Mills River Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Reverend Randall Boggs officiating.

John R. Anderson, former resident of Laurel Park, passed away on June 4th, 2012 in Anaheim, CA at age 75.
Born August 22, 1936 to James N. Anderson and Laura M. Van Campen in Philadelphia, PA, he is survived by daughters Susan Sander, Laura Anderson-Sell (Howard Sell) grandsons Robert & Christopher Sell, adopted sons Matthew and Douglas Anderson; brothers Jim, David, sisters Joan and Barbara and their families. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.
Memorial service is scheduled for 1 pm on Friday, August 17th, 2012 at the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, CA. Memorial contributions can be made to The Wounded Warrior Project.

HENDERSONVILLE — Henry Blakely Burton, M.D., 81, of Hendersonville, died, July 11, 2012 at the Country Meadows Nursing Home in Hendersonville.
Born in Clinton, SC he was the son of the late George Augustus and Rosalyn Blakeley Burton. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Martha Burton.
He is survived by a daughter, Ann Shumaker and her husband, Paul; three grandchildren, Thomas Shumaker, David Shumaker, and Hays Shumaker, all of Granite Falls.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Monday, August 6, 2012 at St. James Episcopal Church, with Reverend Joel G. Hafer officiating.

HENDERSONVILLE — Roger E. Elkins, 67, of Hendersonville, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Pardee Hospital.
He was born in Hewett, West Virginia to the late Lucille and Ed Tackett. After serving 23 years in the Navy as a dental technician, he retired from the military in June of 1985. Following his service in the military, he continued his career as a dental technician in Hendersonville before his retirement in 2010. Before moving to Hendersonville in 1985, he previously lived in Virginia, California, Tennessee, South Carolina and Puerto Rico.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Gloria; daughter, Dione Bishop and her husband, Zeb; granddaughter, Alena Brynn; sisters, Margaret Ball and Charleen Isaacs, both of Hewett, West Virginia.

HORSE SHOE — Don Hemsoth, 93, of Horse Shoe, NC died Thursday August 2, 2012 at 12:45 AM.
A native of Toledo, OH, Mr. Hemsoth enlisted in the Naval Reserve, served 40 months of active duty in WW II as a supply and dispersing officer, and remained in the Reserves, retiring as a Captain after 24 years of service.
He and his wife Alice derived much satisfaction from sharing their time, talent, and treasures with family, church, and community affairs. He retired in 1980 and moved his family from Toledo, OH to Horse Shoe, NC.
He is survived by Alice, his wife of 71 years, a son Gary, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a sister Norma Burnham.

SHELBY — Joan Tomblin Pope passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Rutherford County she was the daughter of the late Flaye Theodore and Adele Hamrick Tomblin. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband Bobby Reid Pope. Joan was previously employed as a preschool teacher at Rainbow Connection. Before that she and her husband were self-employed at Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was a lifelong member of Elizabeth Baptist Church where she taught youth for many years and served in various positions throughout her membership.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Teresa Smith and husband Eddie of Shelby; her son, Greg Pope and wife Lynn of Hendersonville; grandchildren, Amanda Smith of Chapel Hill, Elizabeth Smith of Shelby, Caroline Pope of Hendersonville; sisters, Diane Ross and husband Roger of Shelby, Pat Arrowood and husband Bruce of Greer, SC; brothers, James Tomblin and wife Karen of Greenville, SC, Larry "Bob" Tomblin and wife Betty Jo of Rutherfordton; and many loving nephews and nieces.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, August 5, 2012 at Elizabeth Baptist Church. The Rev. Jeff Brendle will be officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 pm in the sanctuary prior to the service.

Our beloved Deborah “Debbie” Diane Thompson Hamilton (58), passed away peacefully at The
Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina August 5th 2012 at 6:19 A.M. after a short battle with cancer.
Born in Henderson County on February 6th, 1954 to the late Homer and Annie Thompson of
Saluda, N.C. She lived happily in Saluda with her husband, Johnny Hamilton of Hamilton
Landscaping, for 40 years. Their children are daughter, Shanna Cwynar, her husband Marc, and son Kai Elijah Hamilton. One of 7 children, survived by Kay Thompson, Gwen Belcher, Loretta
Thompson, and several nieces and nephews. Her life was her family — she enjoyed cooking, gardening, bird watching, trips to Myrtle Beach, decorating, antiques, her cats and sitting on the porch with a good cup of coffee. She was the co-owner of the charming antique shop The Frozen Clock and enjoyed working for God at her church, Anchor Baptist. She leaves behind a testament of unconditional love, generosity, forgiveness, and to “never forget in life to take time to stop and smell the flowers.”
A graveside service will be held at Saluda Cemetery at 2 P.M. August 7th followed by a visitation at Anchor Baptist Church in Penrose at 6:00 P.M.– 8:00 P.M. A native of Transylvania County, she was a daughter of Laura Sherrill and Bryan Reece of Rosman and Phil Alexander and wife Judy of Flat Rock.
She graduated from Rosman High school. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville.
Diamond is also survived by her grandparents John and Betty Sherrill of Lake Toxaway; her brothers, Eamon John Alexander of Rosman and Graeme Alexander of WV; her sisters, Amber Reece of Rosman, Tristan Brown of Flat Rock and Aquilla Funderburke of FL.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Philips Episcopal Church in Brevard on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at 1:00 PM with the Rev. Joel Hafer. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory.

HENDERSONVILLE — Kate Quinley Anders Watson, 83, of Hendersonville, NC died Monday July 23, 2012 at her residence.
Mrs. Watson was born September 9, 1928 In Opp, Alabama to the late William H. Quinley and Lillie Mae Harrelson Quinley. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Earl Quinley, and by her son, Robert Anders.
An enthusiastic traveler, Mrs. Watson graduated from Blue Ridge College in 1985 with a degree in Travel and Tourism. She was a member of the Friendship Force of WNC. She enjoyed classical and big band music, ballroom dancing and flower gardening. She was a longtime member of St. James Episcopal Church.
She is survived by three daughters Cheryl and Michele Anders of Hendersonville, and Deidre Murphy of Asheville, a daughter-in-law, Amy Arrendell of Asheville, four sisters, Annie Lou Kimbril and Imogene Danley of Alabama, Murlyn Thomas of Tennessee, and Glendal White of Florida. She is also survived by six grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday August 3, 2012 at St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville.

HENDERSONVILLE — Walter F. Moore, 80, of Hendersonville, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012 at the Elizabeth House after a long battle of pulmonary fibrosis.
He was born in Virginia to the late Raymond Moore and Gladys Britt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, David Moore.
He was a graduate of the University of West Virginia, where he received his Master of Music degree in 1959. He recently retired as co-director of the Hendersonville Community Band and in addition to his award winning high school band program, he served in adjunct faculty positions at both Trenton State College and Farleigh Dickenson University. He was in demand as a guest conductor and adjudicator of concert and marching band festivals and competitions in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and South Carolina. He received numerous honors throughout his career; he was elected National President of the ASBDA in 1979 and appeared in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” in 1992. Among his awards, he will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Jersey Music Education Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Darlene; sons, Walter F. Moore II, and his wife, Darla, Robert Alan Moore, and his wife, Susan, Kenneth Todd Moore, and his wife, Jessica; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel with his brother, Rev. Raymond Moore officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

SALUDA — Lula C. Staton of Saluda, NC went to be with the Lord on Sunday August 5, 2012 at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills in Landrum, SC.
She was born October 2, 1912 to M.T. (Tom) and Bessie Summey Staton and lived the majority of her nearly 100 years in Saluda, NC.
She was of the Baptist faith and spent many hours each week listening to her favorite TV preachers. Before the gradual loss of her sight, she loved to crochet and watch her favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves. In recent years, she was still able to share many hours on the phone talking with family and friends and was faithful in keeping up with the sick and shut-ins.
Lula worked in hosiery mills in Tryon and East Flat Rock and for Autumn Care in Saluda before retiring to care for her parents. Over the years, she said that she would rather take care of children than to eat when she was hungry. That was evident by all the special love and care that she gave to her nieces, nephews and several generation of their families. In her early years she also cared for numerous children of many friends who cherish the time she spent with them.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Monty (M.C.) Staton and two sisters, Emmie Staton Gilbert and Isabel Staton Holbert.
Lula is survived by her nephew James Gilbert and wife Linda, nephew Tom Gilbert, nieces, Sandra Gilbert McCall, Brenda Gilbert Durham, Belva Holbert Morrow, Anita Holbert Newman, Suzanne Staton Bane, Becky Staton Rhodes and sister-in-law, Louise Staton. Also surviving are numerous great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews who all referred to her lovingly as “Boober.” She will be missed greatly by her faithful friend and companion, her cat Frisky.
Special thanks go to two very special care givers, Michele Phillips and Jackie Huffman for the many hours of special care and love given to Lula, Hospice nurse Jane Foster, the staff at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Dr. Kim Bridges, Libby Carter with the CAP program of Polk County, the staff of Amazing Grace, extended family, friends, neighbors, and Rev. Henry Vegter and wife Wilma who all showed a special love and support for Lula.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:30pm Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Petty Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1:30pm at the funeral home chapel conducted by Rev. Henry Vegter. Burial will follow in Saluda Cemetery in Saluda, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, 260 Fairwinds Road, Landrum, SC 29356 or to Friendship Baptist Church, P.O. Box 505, Saluda, NC 28773.
