Joseph Glowacki, 81

Joseph "Joe" Glowacki, 81, a 20-year resident of Hendersonville, died at his home Friday morning, July 13, 2012 with his wife Nancy at his side.
Family and friends had supported him so lovingly through the past two years of his physical challenges as he continued his community involvement. After 27 years with Western Electric, now Alcatel-Lucent , as an engineering manager and 8 years as a Quality Control and team-building consultant, Joe transferred his life skills into community service. He was a proud member of the WCCA (Western Carolina Community Action) Board, JCPC Board (Juvenile Crime Prevention Council) , the League of Women Voters Board , Juvenile Justice issues with the courts, the Blue Ridge Village Time Share Board in Banner Elk, NC, and the League’s Immigration committee and the Immigration Network in HC. One of his very favorite jobs was serving as an Election Official for several years! Joe and Nancy are 20-year members of Unity Church of Mills River where he served on the church board. He participated in a local African-American Reading Program, attended the Asheville YWCA’s "Building Bridges" class, and was a group facilitator for the recent Dialogues on Race in Henderson County. He was a member of the NAACP and the United Religions Initiative (URI) , and enjoyed maintaining his wide-spread network of contacts as long as he could. Being the intelligent, spiritual, sensitive, passionate, ‘feisty’ human being he was, he was deeply committed to work for fairness, justice and inclusiveness in our precious democracy, always seeking ways to improve participation and outcomes.
Born in the lower East side of Manhattan, NYC, on Jan. 19, 1931, of immigrant Ukranian parents, Joe was encouraged by his father to pursue a quality education. Joe qualified to enter the acclaimed public Stuyvesant High School for boys, then served two years in the Army and there was encouraged by mentors to seek a college education. He attended Polytechnic Institute of New York, earning a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, followed by a Master’s Degree in Industrial Management after which he joined Western Electric for his long career of 27 years.
In his lifetime, Joe lived and worked in NYC, Texas, Columbus, Ohio; Carmel, Indiana; Lake Forest, Illinois; and here. Family roots, friends, and former co-workers have always been important to Joe. Ukranian relatives live in Canada and Ohio ; life experiences took him to a variety of locations from the West Coast to New England where he created many longstanding friendships. With his wife Nancy of 38 years, he traveled the globe extensively , including a fondly remembered "peace-guide training trip " to the new Russia in 1991 where he was re-acquainted with his Ukrainian roots. Among other things, Joe was an avid reader, card player, traveler and camper; he enjoyed music from classical to country. Joe loved all of nature, but especially the ocean , sunny beaches and sailing ; he admired and practiced the art of carving small statues in wood; he learned and enjoyed the challenge of learning downhill skiing at the age of 50, and bravely ventured into other challenges along the way such as para-sailing and a glider ride. Alas, the "hot-air balloon" ride and the final trip to his home ‘roots’ in NYC were still on the ‘bucket list’.
Currently, his daughter Thea Lisa Glowacki Flinn, lives in Stewartville MN, stepdaughter Anne (and Mick) Alene in Santa Monica CA, and stepdaughter Ellyn (and Paul) Brunskill and two grandchildren Luke, 10 and Grace, 5 , in Tauranga, New Zealand. These and other members of the family and many friends will be present at a wonderful Celebration of Joe’s Life on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 2:00 at the Unity Center at 2401 Old Fanning Bridge Road in Mills River. Please join us.
If anyone wishes to memorialize Joe , there are two places very special to him: first, The Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County at 1304 Ash St. Hendersonville, designating contributions to "Joe Glowacki Memorial" where the money will be used for the highest need; and secondly, to contribute to the "Dream Scholarship" which provides additional dollars to high school students (undocumented) who are outstanding and recommended by their high school counselors for college. Please make the check out to the Community Foundation of Henderson County with "Dream Scholarship" designated. Send to Community Foundation of Henderson County, P.O. Box 1108, Hendersonville, NC 28793-1108.
Abundant gratitude to the St. James Equipment Lending Closet and to the Four Seasons Hospice who supported us with a wonderful home team in Joe’s last two weeks ; and thanks to the many friends who called and sent cards, or who came to meet and talk, played cards, built a much-needed hand railing, and shared meals. We give special gratitude to our minister at Unity of Mills River, Rev. Chad O’Shea who was an ever supportive companion; and to South Park Cremation and Funeral Services who guided us through the cremation process and the final hours with grace and dignity. Every person deserves to be touched through the heart the way Joe was and I am…thank you all!
