A true patriot, Jim served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1963. When he "retired" to North Carolina, he continued to create beautiful things and made many friends along the way. John (Ian) Christopher Smart, 82, died of complications following surgery. Ian was born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, England, in 1930 to Chrissie and Tom Smart.
On completion of his education in Berwick, Ian was lured to the big city, London, to follow his dreams and begin his career. A few years later, in 1962, he was given an even more exciting opportunity, a job with Neiman Marcus in Dallas. But nine years later, along with his partner, Adriaan Meijer, a career move took them to a job with Sears in Chicago. Following the purchase of a chain of department stores in Belgium, Sears relocated them to Brussels for three-and-a-half years to take advantage of Adriaan’s ability to speak Flemish. With a return to Chicago, Ian took a job managing a showroom in the Merchandise Mart which continued until a Sears downsizing prompted a 20-year retirement in Hendersonville.
Ian didn’t have family to survive him but his innate kindness and grace will remain in the memory of all whose lives he touched. Rest well, Ian.
A memorial service will be held on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. at the All Saints Anglican Church, 15 McDowell Road, off of Highway 191, Mills River, phone 891-7116.
