HENDERSONVILLE – Horace Brookshire (HB) Russell Jr, 75, went to be with his savior on Oct. 22, 2012.
He was born in Hendersonville on July 8, 1937. A 1955 graduate of Hendersonville High School, he lived his entire life in the town that he truly cherished. He spent his career in the automotive parts industry, ultimately operating Russell Sales for nearly 20 years until his retirement in 1999. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and dogs at his beloved property in Mills River.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Beverly Bryan Russell; his son, Cameron Brookshire Russell and wife Ann, of Chicago, Ill., and their children, Megan and Will; his brother, Cecil Russell, of Fletcher as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Horace Brookshire Russell, Sr. and Bina Wilkie Russell, as well as his sister, Lois Whitaker and brothers, Marvin and Homer Russell.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, at the First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville with the Revs. Dan Martin and Christy Sharp officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Gettman Room.

HENDERSONVILLE — Dorothy “Dot” Hedrick Torres, 87, of Hendersonville, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012. She was born July 26, 1925 in Hickory, NC to the late Elsie Mahaffey Hedrick and Coy Hedrick.
Dot Torres came to Hendersonville as an eight year old child. She graduated from Hendersonville High School, attended Belk’s Merchandising School, then began a remarkable involvement in community organizations and activities. For fifteen years Dot participated in all school activities. Along the way she was president of the P.T.A. and of Band Parents. She was a Girl Scout leader, the historian for Girl scouts of America, and a member of the board of directors of the Girl Scouts. She served on the board of the Henderson County Heart Association, the Henderson County Cancer Association, the March of Dimes Association and the Western Carolina Easter Seals Society. She also served on Mayor A.O. Edward’s planning board and worked on fund raising for the new Y.M.C.A. Dot is a member of the First Baptist Church. She has belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary for twenty five years. While belonging to the latter organization, she has served as its local and district president and has held three state offices. In 1965 she was honored by the V.F.W. as Henderson County Woman of the Year. In addition, for thirty five years Dot has been a volunteer worker at Margaret R. Pardee Hospital. She has worked with the elderly for the past fifteen years, but her longest volunteer involvement has been with the Red Cross Bloodmobile for forty years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Torres and her brother Kenneth Hedrick.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Torres, of Asheville, Lolita Torres Parker and husband, Nelson Parker, of Seven Lakes West; a grandson, Shane Parker and his wife, Jessica Parker; a great-grandson, Gavin Parker; sisters-in-law, Rosa Torres Beane, Mary Torres; cousin, Louise Dowling and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville’s Chapel. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The Rev. Wally Shamburger will officiate.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund.

PENROSE — Billy R. Brown, 82, of Penrose, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012. He was born in Macon County on July 17, 1930, to the late Frank Clinton Brown and Rosa Bullard Brown.
Mr. Brown was a member of Little River Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class. He was an avid Hunter, a member of the Men’s Democrat Club and worked 45 years for the Ecusta Corporation.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Green Brown, of the home, a son, Michael R. Brown and his wife JoeAnn, of Greer, S.C., a daughter, Sandra McCall and her husband Marshall, of Brevard, grandchildren, Lissa Padgett, of Penrose and Jeff Brown, of Atlanta, great-grandchildren, Kohl Padgett and Kyndall Padgett, both of Penrose, Pearson Brown and Oliver Brown, both of Atlanta, two sisters, Elsie White and Rometta Norris, both of Washington State, a brother, George B. Brown, of Clyde, and a special grand dog Bella.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Brown.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at Little River Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev Chris Farmer and Rev. Danny Byers will officiate.

ETOWAH — Joseph Hunter Gooding, III, 79, of Etowah, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. He was born in Scranton, Pa., to the late Charles P. Gooding and Hilda Brown Gooding. He was the husband of the late Margo Berger Gooding.
Mr. Gooding was a U.S. Army veteran and worked in marketing for 34 years for Gates Rubber Company.
He is survived by a granddaughter, Alicia C. Gooding, of Etowah; a grandson, Steven J. Kirkendall, of Aurora, Colo., and a great-grandson, Hunter Joseph Gooding, of Etowah.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Hilda Gooding.
Graveside services will be held at 12 noon, Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

HENDERSONVILLE — St. Michael the Arch Angel has called another paratrooper home. LTC (Ret.) Anthony Stephen Slovacek, 73, of Hendersonville, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at the Charles George VA Medical Center.
A native of Schenectady, N.Y., Anthony was a son of the late Anthony and Esther Kovarovic Slovacek.
He was a 1960 graduate of the Citadel and served as a career soldier for 27 years. An Airborne Ranger, he had earned the Master Parachutist’s Badge and the Pathfinder Badge. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, earning three purple hearts, five Bronze Star medals, seven Air Medals and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Before retirement from the U.S. Army in 1987, he was awarded the Legion of Merit. He later served as a Department of Defense Civilian, working with the Department of Defense Dependent Schools System and the U.S. Army Personnel Command in Europe.
He and his wife retired to Hendersonville, N.C., in 1996. Enjoying his adopted hometown, he served on the City Tree Board and on the Hendersonville Planning Board. He was member of Apple Country Woodcrafters and Greenville Woodworkers Guild. He served Western North Carolina high school athletics as a soccer referee for several years. He volunteered with the Henderson County Chapter of the American Red Cross and North Carolina Cooperative Extension as a Master Gardner. He was a mentor to 4-H Youth in the Mini-Garden and Creative Garden Programs.
He was a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church.
Tony is survived by his wife of 49 years, "BJ" Kinns Slovacek; four daughters, Stephanie Slovacek Johnson and her husband, Johnny, of Columbia, S.C., Jennifer Slovacek Lintz and her husband, Larry, of Dayton, Ohio, Sara Slovacek Greene and her husband, Mark, of Shelby, N.C., and Amy Slovacek Bigham and her husband, Jim, of Columbia, S.C.; three sisters, Nancy Elliott, of Tampa, Fla., Jane Reitmeier and her husband, Bill, of Roebuck, S.C., and Carol Thompson and her husband, Eric, of Greenville, S.C.; nine grandchildren, Christopher and Patrick Johnson, Zachary, Katie and Anthony Lintz, Benjamin and Ashleigh Greene and Tessa and Chloe Bigham as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church with Father Adrian Porras officiating. There will be a reception at the church immediately following the Mass. The burial with full military honors will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, S.C.

LANDRUM, S.C. — John W. Killough, of Landrum, S.C., died suddenly Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional.
He is survived by his wife, Vickie Killough of 35 years; a son, Joe Killough (Chris); two daughters, Wendi Stein (Dwayne) and Capt. Kari Turley (Capt. Pat Turley); and five grandchildren, Noah and Jeb Killough, Gavin Stein and Coraline and Lenora Turley; a brother, Wally Killough (Karen) and their two children, Julia Finley (Owen) and Eric Killough (Beth).
He was a graduate of Appalachian State and received an MBA from USC. He was a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and a loved and respected banker in the Landrum-Tryon-Columbus area. He was a banking executive for over 30 years and retired August 2011. He was an active member of Landrum United Methodist Church. He co-founded the first Landrum Sports Program and basketball youth leagues in the area churches.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at Petty Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Landrum United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Jane Jenkins. Burial will follow at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery in Mills River, N.C. at 2 p.m.

WARTBURG, TENN. – David E. Hall, 72, of Wartburg, Tenn., passed away Friday, Oct. 19.
He was a graduate of Central High School in Wartburg and of Warren Wilson College. He received his Master’s Degree from The University of Tennessee.
He worked as the Director of Personnel of Belk Stores in Asheville and Greensboro, NC. Later he became the International Director of Internal Operations Training for Integrated Control Systems, Litchfield, Connecticut. During his travels David worked on projects in 49 of the 50 states, excluding Nevada. He worked around the globe in China, Malaysia, Singapore and numerous European Countries. He ended his professional career with Spearin, Preston & Burroughs, Inc. in New York and then moved his family back to Hendersonville.
He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church Hendersonville; serving as an Usher, Sunday school teacher and volunteer with the Food Service Ministry. David was an original member of “The Sponge Club” and is the first member to be “promoted.”
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Dianne Carpenter Hall of Hendersonville; his son, Eric of Little Rock, Arkansas; his daughter, Molly of Asheville; his son, David and wife Nicole and their son Dylan of Metairie, La.
A visitation is scheduled at First Baptist Church Hendersonville Saturday, October 27th 2012, for 10 a.m. with a Memorial Service to follow.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked for a memorial contribution to the First Baptist Church Hendersonville Children’s Building Fund.

HENDERSONVILLE – Vernon Hoxit, age 77, passed away at his home in Hendersonville, NC on October 23, 2012. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Burgess and Emily Anders Hoxit, brothers Jerry and Rothie Hoxit, and brothers-in-law Frank Norris and James Owens. He is survived by his son, Larry V. Hoxit, sisters Betty H. Norris, Verda Hoxit and Barbara H. Owens, and brother Verlon and wife, Mary Anne Hoxit all of Hendersonville, NC, Grandsons Eric C. Hoxit of Morrisville, NC and Mark A. and Sarah Hoxit of East Windsor, NJ, great grandson, Quinn James Hoxit, as well as a great number of nieces and nephews.
Vernon served his country honorably with two tours of duty in the Army. He proudly served Texas City,Texas Fire Department, and retired following 20 years service. Vernon loved to cook, especially on the grill. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, riding his tractor and lawnmower, classic country and gospel music. He always enjoyed visits from family and friends.
A visitation will be held Saturday, October 27, 2012, from 1:PM until 2:30 PM at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home, in Brevard, NC. Graveside services will follow at the family cemetery on Holly Springs Church Road (Crab Creek Community) Hendersonville, NC.

Phillip Cavaliere and Scott Teer officiating under the direction of Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Road. Burial will follow at Rosewood Park. Mr. Robinson passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2012.
Mr. Robinson was born August 17, 1961, in Asheville, North Carolina to Gay and Frances Dockery Robinson. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and owned the Gilmer and Mt. Pleasant Tae Kwon Do Studios. He did security for disaster relief. Mr. Robinson attended LeTourneau University on baseball and basketball scholarships. His greatest love was teaching. He was a teacher at Longview High School for 25 years. Mr. Robinson loved playing golf. He loved people and cooking.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ronda Robinson; daughter, Shea Robinson; son, Ty Robinson all of Longview; his parents, Gay and Frances Robinson; sister, Glenda Morgan and husband, Gary all of North Carolina; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, October 28, 2012, at Welch Funeral Home.

Seldon Edgar Shipman, Jr., 90

HENDERSONVILLE – Seldon Edgar Shipman, Jr., “Buddy”, 90, of Hendersonville, passed away on Thursday October 25, 2012 at the Elizabeth House with his family at his side.
Buddy is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary McLeod Shipman, and six sons: Steve Shipman and wife Ann of Myrtle Beach; Bob Shipman and wife Cindy of Lamar, SC; Seldon Edgar Shipman III (Eddie) and wife Ginnie of Rosman, Jon McLeod and wife Kelli of Brevard; Stuart Shipman of the home; Tim Shipman and wife Charlene of Hendersonville; six grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shipman was born in Hendersonville on June 23, 1922 to the late Seldon Edgar Shipman, Sr. and Lula Sherman Shipman. He was a lifelong resident of Hendersonville and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church. He served during WW II as an MP in the Air Force in Guam and the Philippines. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Frances Kuykendall Self, and his brothers Clifton and James.
Buddy was instrumental in many businesses over the years, including the Saddle Club on State Street, the Smoke Shop newsstand on 3rd Avenue, the Sunshine Lodge, the Jefferson Hotel, and others. He was best known as the manager of the Chicken Shack on 7th Avenue, where he worked for almost 20 years.
Buddy and Mary married in 1951 and have lived in their house on Hyman Avenue since 1953. They loved their life together and raised six boys there. He was proud of his boys, and never missed a ball game if one of them was playing. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Buddy was a selfless, hard working man with a kind and gentle soul. He was also the best whistler ever.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday October 29, 2012 at Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel conducted by Dr. Wally Shamburger. The family will receive friends following the service.

HENDERSONVILLE – Estelle Frisbee Strider was a native of Hendersonville, born in 1921, and attended Flat Rock School. When her parents died she was raised in the Presbyterian Home for Children along with her sisters. She graduated from Swannanoa High School and from Montreat College with a Business Diploma in 1940.
She married Noel Luther (Buck) Lowe and they lived together until his was deployed by the Army Air Corp to the South Pacific in WW II. Cpl. Lowe was declared Missing in Action in 1944. Preceding her in death were here parents, John Baxter Frisbee and Nellie Markham Frisbee, her brother John Frisbee, and sisters Mildred Rogers and Marie Waddell.
Estelle worked at the County Farm Extension Office for 2 years and with NCDOT for 30 years, retiring in 1983.
Surviving is her daughter, Alice Lowe Betts and husband Robert, her granddaughter Kathryne Lorraine Cavanaugh and husband Dean, and grandson Christopher Betts and wife Nancy. She had two great-grandchildren, Emma Lorraine and Johnathan Edward Markham Cavanaugh who she loved dearly. Her nieces Nellie Ann Justice, Ethel Snider, Francis Grant, Marie Ann Waddell, and nephews Tom Waddell and Brook Waddell also survive her.
Estelle loved all kinds of flowers and had beautiful flower beds while she lived in her home and until she moved Lake Pointe Landing and later Pine Park. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she played the piano for her Sunday School Class and the organ for occasional services. She was also intensely interested in politics and loved to discuss them with anyone.
Her Memorial service will be conducted in the Memorial Garden at First United Methodist Church by Rev. Dan Martin, and her ashes placed in the Columbarium at the church. There will a small service for family and friends. Any memorial may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

ETOWAH – Lt. Col. Paul Edwin Wollerman, age 92 of Etowah, NC, died Friday October 26, 2012. He was born April 1, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Alex Wollerman and Irene Johnson Wollerman. Along with his parents, Lt. Col. Wollerman was also preceded in death by his brother, Richard (Dick) Wollerman, sister Barbara Brown and son Michael Henson.
Lt. Col. Wollerman retired from the U.S. Air Force having served during WWII and the Korean conflict. He later retired from Commonwealth-Edison Power in Chicago.
Lt. Col. Wollerman is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Henry Wollerman; sons David Wollerman of Grand Rapids, MI and Richard Wollerman and his wife Gretchen of Napervile, IL; daughters Patricia MacCarthy and husband Thomas of Lake Kensington, IL, Susan Levin and husband Robert of Anacortes, WA, Judith Sandor and Rebecca Henry and Cliff Watson of Etowah, NC; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

HENDERSONVILLE — Ronald Corn, 64, of Hendersonville, died Friday, October 26. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Eley and Daisy Belle Jenkins Corn. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Corn. He attended Roberson High School and served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He had been a resident of Henderson County for the past 23 years and had retired from BorgWarner. He was a member of Skyland Baptist Church. Mr. Corn is survived by his son, Ronald Kevin Corn of Swannanoa; his daughter, Tina Marie Corn of Fletcher; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Audrey, Dakota, Nathanael, Akira, Carissa and Samantha Corn; one great-grandchild, Hayden Corn; two sisters, Dorothy Morgan of Asheville and Donnie Grindstaff of Arden, and many nieces and nephews.
