Asheville – Walter S. “Mickey” Hoyle, 73, of Asheville, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at the Brian Center in Hendersonville after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Asheville. He loved this community where he helped build the family business, Hoyle Office Solutions, and raised his family.
Mickey graduated from Lee Edwards High School in 1957 and was an outstanding basketball player. After attending Wake Forest University, Mickey spent time in the US Army Reserve at Ft. Sill, OK. Upon his return from the Army, Mickey graduated from Mars Hill College in 1964 with a business degree. During that time, he was a star basketball player who in 2010 was honored and inducted into the Mars Hill College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mickey was an avid golfer and long time member of The Country Club of Asheville. It was here that some of his most cherished friendships were formed. Those friendships carried him throughout his life and were instrumental in providing him strength through his cancer fight. Along with his passion for golf, Mickey equally loved shag dancing and was a proud member of the Carolina Shag Club and the Mountain Shag Club.
Mickey is survived by his parents, J.W. “Red” and Christine G. Hoyle; his son, Rick Hoyle (Paula) and their children, Evan and Emerson Hoyle; his daughter, Kelly H. Owensby (Jerry) and their son, Austin Owensby. Also surviving are Mickey’s two brothers and sister, Jimmy, Tommy and Kathy Hoyle. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Kathy H. McKinney, and a special friend, Joyce Anderson.
Mickey’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Mickey’s many friends for the outpouring of love and support during this time; the physicians and staff at The Brian Center in Hendersonville, Cancer Care of WNC and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center of Houston, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the First Baptist Church of Asheville with the Rev. David Blackmon and the Rev. Eddie Morgan officiating. Interment will follow at Lewis Memorial Park. The family will received friends from 6-8 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 14, at Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Ave., Asheville.
