After a long and very active life, Mary Elizabeth Chalfant, of Hendersonville, passed away on Jan. 1, 2013, at the vigorous age of 79. Born on June 1, 1933, in Greenville County, S.C., Mary was the first daughter of the late Otis and Helen McDowell.
Mary was retired from Kimberly-Clark and most recently enjoyed her work for the State of North Carolina with the staff and children of Henderson County Public Schools PSPM Program.
She is survived by her immediate family, Donald Chalfant, of Annapolis, Md., Wade McDowell and his wife, Ginny, of Inman, S.C., and Peggy Ballenger, of Naples, N.C. She also leaves behind an aunt, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, caregivers, and others to fondly remember her.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 6, at her church: Feed and Seed, 3715 Hendersonville Road, Fletcher N.C. Pastor Phillip Trees will officiate and the family will receive friends immediately after the service.
