Claude Benjamin Goswick Jr., MD, 83, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, October 7, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church in Bryan.
Born on August 22, 1929, in Durham, to Claude and Agnes Sinclair Goswick, he attended public school in Durham, graduated Duke University in 1951, and Duke Medical School in 1955. After his internship at Cincinnati General Hospital, he returned to work in Pediatrics at Duke Hospital. Claude joined the Air Force in 1956 and was stationed at Kindley Air Force Base in Bermuda. There, he met Louise Randall of Fort Worth, Texas, and on April 4, 1959, they were married.
Upon completion of his service in the Air Force, Claude and Louise moved to Hendersonville in 1959. He was in private practice in Hendersonville until 1973, at which time he took a position at the Texas A&M Student Health Center in College Station, Texas. Within the year, Claude became the Director of Student Health and held that position until he retired in 1988. After retirement, he became coowner in G&S Studies, a pharmaceutical research firm in College Station. Claude was employed to the present at both DCI, and Westgate Plasma Centers of College Station.
Claude was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bryan since 1973, and a member of the choir. He oversaw the move into the new A P Beutel Student Health Center in 1973 and the subsequent expansion of the same facility. Along with Laura Kitzmiller in 1976, he helped establish the Emergency Medical Service at Texas A&M and the Texas A&M Emergency Care Team. He operated the First Aid Stations at Kyle Field for all home games until 1988. He served as team physician for all away football trips during his tenure at Texas A&M University. He was honored in 1976 by the Texas A&M Emergency Care Team for his work as a Physician Advisor. In 1980, he received the “Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award in Staff Administration” by the Association of Former Students of Texas A&M. In 1984, he was honored by Texas A&M Athletics and Jackie Sherrill for “Loyalty to Aggie Athletics.” Since 2000, he had been a consultant to the Texas Rehabilitation Commission.
Claude is preceded in death by his parents, Claude Sr. and Agnes Sinclair Goswick, and sisterin- law, Betty Goswick. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Louise, of Bryan; and four sons, Richard, David and his wife Tracy all of Houston, Ben and his wife Debbie of San Antonio, and Cameron and his wife Brenda of Sugar Land. He is also survived by his brother, Alex Goswick of Durham and his son Bart Goswick. He was a proud grandfather to grandsons: Chris, Michael, Austin, Bryan, Cole, Kyle, Drew, Cameron, Collin, Connor, Cullen, and granddaughter Jillian. He also has three great-grandsons: Parker, Carson, and Daniel.
The Goswick family is grateful for the kind and knowledgeable care of the physicians, nurses and hospital staff during a brief declining period of Claude’s life. Their care and support has made a lasting impression to treasure.
