James Hammond Jr, 86

HENDERSONVILLE — Mr. James Alfred "Jim" Hammond Jr., of Hendersonville, NC, son of Katie Holcombe Hammond and James Alfred Hammond Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of 86, on September 1 2012. He made his journey to heaven from Elizabeth House, surrounded by his family. Jim was an active member of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville for more than 65 years. His beautiful tenor voice rang out from the choir loft every Sunday. He served in the US Navy and was an honored veteran. He worked for Met Life, Penny Insurance, and Globe Treks, frequently taking groups on tours of the Holy Lands. He was loved and respected wherever he went and touched many lives with his beautiful poetry. His sense of humor could bring tears of laughter and brighten any day.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris Anne Edmundson Hammond; two sons, James Rixon Hammond of Atlanta, GA and Robert Edward Hammond of Clifton Park, NY; two daughters, Deborah Loyce Hammond, of Hendersonville, NC and Elizabeth Anne Hammond Levy of Seattle, WA; three grandchildren, Daniel Rixon Hammond of Atlanta, GA, Katie Rebecca Levy and Louis Ray Levy of Seattle, WA; two brothers, William
Edward Hammond III of Durham, NC and Mickey Maybin of Hendersonville, NC; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his dog Pogo. A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 05, 2012 at the Hendersonville First Baptist Church with Rev. Wally Shamburger and Dr. Ryan Pack officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Henderson County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 pm in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Music Ministry. Jackson Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
